We've Always Been Breck
Gold strike date: August 10, 1859
FUN FACT: The largest piece of gold ever found in the state of Colorado was discovered near Breckenridge- weighing in at more than 13 pounds, "Tom's Baby" was struck on July 23, 1887. It is now on display at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science.
Way before Breckenridge was a ski resort, it was a town. And over the past 150 years, the spirit of the town didn't shift much.
Full of gold finds and mining, exploration and adventure, brothels and saloons, booms and busts, the town's history set the stage for the modern-day adventures Breckenridge is known and loved for. Founded in 1859 by a small group of prospectors, the town's gold rush brought settlers in droves seeking their fortune. Breckenridge became the county seat and was Colorado's first town established west of the Continental Divide.
Fusing history and recreation is a natural evolution for Breckenridge, which after many boom and bust cycles, today thrives as America's most popular ski resort and a summer paradise. In fact, men skied in Breckenridge as early as the winter of 1859-60.
The town's history can be experienced and celebrated by families, adventure seekers and history buffs alike. Visitors are encouraged to explore its prominent National Historic District, featuring over 200 structures. Lodging packages are plentiful; choose from cozy bed & breakfasts, hotels, condos and private homes so you can relax while you explore.
